Claude 5.5 & GPT-6 Free Without Subscription: Puter Setup We Tested

We ran Claude 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra on our own PC through a free Puter account and a simple localhost chat page. No Claude or ChatGPT subscription, no paid API key. Here is the setup, what the 1,000 monthly credits really buy you, and where the free route stops being enough.

Claude and ChatGPT both want about $20 a month before they let you near their best models. So a setup that gives you Claude 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra without either subscription gets your attention fast, and it should also get a bit of suspicion. Free routes to flagship models usually turn out to be a renamed cheaper model, a shared account, or a trick that died last week.

This one is different because it runs through Puter, a real platform with its own official API, and because we ran it ourselves before writing this. We created the account, built the little chat page on our own PC, signed in on localhost, and chatted with the models from a dropdown. It worked. This article is the written version: what you actually get, the setup in plain steps, how the 1,000 monthly credits work, and the honest limits you should know before you rely on it.

The 5 flagship models you get free

One Puter account and one chat page give you five models that normally sit behind paid plans:

  1. Claude Fable 5.1
  2. Claude Opus 5.5
  3. Claude Sonnet 5.5
  4. Claude Sonnet 5
  5. GPT-6 Astra

You pick the model from a dropdown, type your message, and the answer comes back in the same window. Switching models is just a new selection before your next message, so comparing Claude and GPT-6 on the same question takes seconds. In practice, Sonnet 5.5 covers everyday coding and writing, Opus 5.5 or GPT-6 Astra is for genuinely hard problems, and Sonnet 5 gives a fast, solid answer without burning credits on a flagship.

What Puter is, and where "free" actually comes from

Puter is an internet operating system and developer platform. The part that matters here is its AI API: instead of you buying an API key from Anthropic or OpenAI, your web page loads Puter's JavaScript library, you sign in with your own Puter account, and the AI cost is charged against your account. Puter calls this the user-pays model. The app developer pays nothing, and each user spends their own allowance.

For a free account, that allowance is 1,000 credits per month. No credit card, no fake API key bought from a stranger, and no renamed budget model pretending to be a flagship. When your credits run out, the chat stops working until the next cycle or until you upgrade. That is the whole deal, and it is a fair one for testing and learning.

The setup also lives on your own machine. The chat page is a single HTML file, ai-chat.html, that you open locally, and your prompts go from that page to Puter under your account. That is a much cleaner arrangement than pasting your code into a random "free GPT" website and hoping for the best.

The setup, step by step

The video walks through every screen, from download to first answer:

In plain steps, it is this:

  1. Create a free Puter account if you do not have one yet.
  2. Download the ai-chat.html file from our Google Drive folder.
  3. Make a folder on your PC, name it something like puter-chat, and put the file inside it.
  4. Open that folder in VS Code (File, then Open Folder).
  5. Install the Live Server extension by Ritwick Dey from the Extensions panel.
  6. Right-click ai-chat.html and choose "Open with Live Server". Your browser opens the page at a local address, 127.0.0.1:5500/ai-chat.html.
  7. Click "Connect Puter" and sign in on the popup with your Puter account.
  8. Pick a model from the dropdown, type a real question, and press Send.

That is the entire stack. There is no server to configure, no API key to paste into the file, and nothing to deploy. If Live Server does not start, the usual causes are opening the file directly from disk instead of through the extension, or having another program already using port 5500. Open it through Live Server and the Connect button works as shown in the video.

One habit worth starting on day one: keep this page for your own use. It runs under your Puter login, so anyone you share a live session with is spending your credits.

How the 1,000 monthly credits work in practice

Credits are the real limit here. Light models sip them. Flagships like Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra drink them, especially on long answers and long pasted documents. A month of casual questions, short coding help, and drafting fits comfortably. A week of feeding entire codebases to Opus does not.

To stretch the allowance, use Sonnet 5 or Sonnet 5.5 as your default, save the flagships for questions where extra reasoning actually changes the answer, and keep prompts tight. When the credits are gone, the models stop answering, nothing breaks, and the counter resets with the new month.

Four honest limits before you rely on this

Free routes can change. Puter sets the allowance and the model list, and either can change. Our standing advice with every free setup we test, including our GPT-6 Astra free Codex setup, is the same: use it while it works and never build a deadline on top of it.

Credits are a ceiling, not a subscription. A paid Claude or ChatGPT plan buys you generous, predictable access. One thousand credits buys you a real taste of the flagship models and a lot of useful everyday work, but it is a budget, and heavy users will feel it.

Your prompts leave your PC. The page is local, but the models are not. What you type is processed by Puter and the model providers, so keep client secrets, private keys, and sensitive personal data out of the chat.

Model availability can shift. The dropdown reflects what Puter offers at that moment. A model can be renamed, moved, or paused, and the page will simply show the current list.

Who should use this, and who should still pay

Use the free Puter route if you want to find out what Claude 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra are actually like before spending anything, if you are learning, or if your AI use is a handful of good questions a day. It is also a smart second opinion setup: ask one model, then check the answer with the other, without owning two subscriptions.

Pay for a subscription if AI is part of your daily job, if you hit credit ceilings in the first week, or if your work involves private code and client data that should stay inside a paid, accountable service. Paid plans buy you headroom and predictability. The free route buys you knowledge, and for a lot of people that is the right first purchase: it costs nothing.

FAQ

Is Claude 5.5 really free on Puter, or is it a renamed model?

The models are served through Puter's official API under your own account, and the model names in the dropdown are the models your requests are routed to. Free access is funded by your account's monthly credit allowance, which is why it has a ceiling instead of a subscription bill.

What happens when my 1,000 credits run out?

The chat stops returning answers until your allowance resets the next month or you upgrade your Puter account. Nothing breaks and your page keeps working, it just has no credits left to spend.

Do I need an API key or a credit card?

No. You sign in with a free Puter account from the chat page itself. There is no Anthropic or OpenAI API key to create and no card required for the free tier.

Can I use this instead of a Claude or ChatGPT subscription?

For light and occasional use, yes, and it is a good way to compare both model families in one window. If you use AI heavily every day, a subscription will feel less restrictive, because credits run out while a paid plan mostly does not.

Five flagship models, one free account, and a chat page that runs on your own PC. Set it up once, spend your 1,000 credits on questions that matter, and by the end of the month you will know exactly which subscription, if any, is worth your money.
